The Eurovision Song Contest – Wartime Housewife Competition

The actual badge is very sharp and handsome; this is, I fear, an imperfect scan

UPDATE: Saturday 10.00 (UK time) The Wartime Household predictions are:
1st Italy – 12 points
2nd France – 10 points
3rd – Ireland / Austria & Serbia – 8 points

I’m sure you’re all getting terribly excited about tomorrow’s Eurovision Song Contest.  If you’re anything like me, you’ll be getting your family or friends together, drinking wine, eating Twiglets  and getting increasingly hopeful about Blue’s entry for Royaume Unis.  To make your evening go with a bang, I have typed up a handy score sheet for you and three other family members.

Now for the competition in which you can win a, soon to be coveted, Wartime Housewife button badge.  All you have to do is leave a comment on this post before 8pm (UK time) on Saturday night and give your prediction as to which country is going to win.  The winning entries will be put in a hat and a winner drawn at random.  That winner will be notified on this site and you can discreetly send me your address and I shall post the badge to you on Monday morning.

The best way to print off this sheet is to highlight the whole table, then copy and paste it into a Word document, which is the work of a moment.  Then you can print off as many copies as you need!  Good luck dear chums…

Well Lordi, Lordi, Lordi…’I've Been Making My Mind Up’ and think that Blue have met their ‘Waterloo’ in Jedward who will prove that they are no ‘Puppet[s] on a String’.
My prediction is that Ireland will pick up the trophy again and be knocking back the Bucks Fizz on Sunday morning…but hey ho…’What’s Another Year?’

What a beautiful badge! I covet it!

  3. wartimehousewife May 13, 2011 at 22:57 #

Oh Glynis – I am not worthy. But I may well be ‘Flying the Flag’ by tomorrow night and if I do, I shall ‘Shine a Light’ for you. But if we lose, I shall certainly feel ‘Rock Bottom’ and will request that they ‘Don’t play that song again’.
Please – save me from myself! Look what you started!!!!
Still, ‘Better the Devil you know’ eh?

  4. wartimehousewife May 13, 2011 at 22:58 #

    Rightly so, Freelance, rightly so…

I can’t believe I like and watch the show but I certainly do.

  6. Vinogirl May 14, 2011 at 01:36 #

I like it too. I miss watching it every year, last saw it in 2006 – Greece, Nana Mouskouri made an appearance…I love Nana.

Ooohhh, it must be me then….l really don’t like the Euro contest. Years ago it was ok but people try too hard now and l am sure it is rigged. After all, not EVERY member state in the EU can hate us, can they?

  8. Toffeeapple May 14, 2011 at 09:32 #

I’m with Trevor on this one!

  9. Andy and Teddy May 14, 2011 at 12:00 #

Which ever one wins we shall make an effort to avoid contact with it at all costs!

    Hrrummphh!

  10. Chunter May 14, 2011 at 13:17 #

Have you not heard of eurovisiopsephology?

  11. wartimehousewife May 14, 2011 at 13:48 #

    Yes they can Trevor.

I have now Chunter. What an extraordinary and glorious piece of study/research. Personally I shall be collusively voting for the Funky Countries. Despite the comprehensive nature of this study however, it still doesn’t explain why Israel competes. Anyone?

Used your scoring sheet, but couldn’t give you a prediction until we’d heard them all! Moldovia’s hats were a bit of a treat!

Wanting to attempt to win the lovely WH badge I made an effort to watch the quick run-down of candidates at the end of the show. I’m afraid that once again my jaw just dropped open in disbelief. But oddly enough the winner did have a certain appeal.

Well, who would have thought Azerbaijan? I did like Moldova though.

The winner of the Wartime Housewife Eurovision Competition is…..
    VINOGIRL!
However, I have decided to award an extra badge to GLYNIS for being such a superb Eurovisual geek.
Send your addresses to wartimehousewife@gmail.com and I will post your badges to you tomorrow.

Our household votes went to Azerbaijan and Moldova. I do think any musical performance could be improved by the random appearance of a girl on a unicycle. The Messiah, for example.

  17. wartimehousewife May 15, 2011 at 22:03 #

Backwatersman: As you were the only person to give a bona fide (albeit belated) prediction, I would be delighted to send you a badge as well. Email your address to wartimehousewife@gmail.com and it shall be posted.

Thank you WH…I’ll be in touch directly. Hope the Sauvignon Blanc hit the right spot tonight!

  19. wartimehousewife May 15, 2011 at 23:24 #

    Oh yes.

  20. Vinogirl May 16, 2011 at 04:39 #

Oh my God…I never win anything…I’m emailing you right now.

  21. Christine Parker-Cale May 16, 2011 at 18:25 #

Please Wartime housewife will you have another competition for those of us weirdos who don’t have a telly. I really want a chance to win one of your badges. I am deeply traumatised by never get a Blue Peter one. Wonderful Site, brings me great pleasure, well done. CPC

  22. wartimehousewife May 16, 2011 at 21:58 #

Thanks so much much for your encouraging words Christine, I’m so glad you like the site and I applaud your lack of televisual distraction. I didn’t get a Blue Peter Badge either but I DID get a ‘Magpie’ badge which was the ITV equivalent. I used to get the mickey taken out of me at prep school for watching ‘commercial television’ so I pretended that we did it out of choice because ITV was funky and modern. In reality it was because our proximity to Heathrow Airport buggered up transmission and we couldn’t get BBC.
